Question

the technique for measuring forces that was used in this experiment can be applied to determine the forces exerted by the piers of a bridge. However,in this instance, the forces are reversed. the two piers supports will exert an upward force, and the person standing on the bridge will exert a downward force on the bridge. calculate the force exerted by each pier|(F1 and F2) of a 5.0m footbridge of 100.0kg mass, evenly distributed, when a 55kg person stands 2m from the one end of the bridge. show all calculations

Explanation / Answer

let F1 and F2 be the forces exerted by each pier, (left and right). Assume that the person stand near pier 1. we have that F1+F2=(100+55)*g --- net torque about pier 1 is zero. 55*g*2+100*g*2.5=F2*5 so F2=706(N). F1=813(N)
