Question

There are 5 locations illustrated on a diagram(dont know how to put it on here so will describe) that show the movement of a roller skater at a park. There are 5 locations on the diagram. they progrss form the beginning position at 1 to the final at 5. Beginning with position 1 describe the PE and KE at each positon relative to the other position on the course. Assume skater begins at rest from 1.

description of course:

Looks like inverted mountain. Position 1 begins at 11:00, with two gently sloping to 8:00, then dips

deeply to 6:00 at position 3 and steeply rises in staight line slanted to right with position 4 at 4:00 and final 5 at 1:00.

Explanation / Answer

We can assume the mechanical energy of the system remains constant. The skater begins at rest at 1, so the KE there is 0, and the PE is at its maximum.

Throughout the course, PE+KE = ME. PE depends on the height. So as the skater's height decreases, KE increases, and vice versa.

Ranking each position in terms of PE is equivalent to ranking each position in terms of height. Ranking each position in KE is the reverse of ranking each position in PE.
