Question
Two particles having charges q_1 = 0.500 nC and q_2 = 8.00 nC are separated by a distance of 1.30 m.At what point along the line connecting the two charges is the total electric field due to the two charges equal to zero?Explanation / Answer
Let us consider a point p (where electric field is zero) at a distance x from charge q1 (left side). So that we have E1 + E2 = 0 ==> q1 / x^2 - q2 / (1.3+ x)^2 = 0 ==> 0.5 / ( x)^2 - 8.0 / (1.3 +x)^2 = 0 ==> 0.5 / ( x)^2 = 8.0 /(1.3 +x)^2 ==> 0.5 * (1.3 + x)^2 = 8.0 x^2 ==> 7.5 x^2 - 0.845 - 1.3x = 0 Solving this we get X = 0.476 m to the left from charge q1 and 1.3 + 0.476 = 1.776 m to the left from charge q2
