Question

BICH 411 8.) (a)( 2 pts) ng 2017 80 pts Assignment 8 Due at the beginning of class: Friday, April 24 Unlabeled and the following radio labeled M CoA were used as substrates for fatty acid synthase. Show where the radio labels will appear in palmitate (6:0) No red olabus will appear in hote in this cose palmilate (b) (2 pts) Unlabeled acetyl-CoA and the following radio labeled Malonyl CoA were used as substrates for fatty acid synthase. Show where the radio labels will appear in palmitate (16:0) Palmitate (c) (2 pts) Unlabeled acetyl-CoA and the following radio labeled Malonyl CoA were used as substrates for fatty acid synthase. Show where the radio labels will appear in palmitate (16:0) CoA

Explanation / Answer

Acetyl CoA is unlabelled and in Malonyl CoA is radio labelled. Carbon 1 of Acetyl CoA becomes Carbon 15 of Palmitate and Carbon 2 of Acetyl CoA becomes Carbon 16 of Palmitate. So Carbon 15 and 16 will not be labelled in Palmitate. Thus the answer is correct i.e. Carbon 15 in Palmitate should be not be radio labelled.

Radiolabels would appear on Carbons 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13.
