Question

Please help me!! this is due at 11:30 tonight!

a.) A magnetic field has a magnitude of 1.20 x 10^-3 T, and an electric field has a magnitude of 5.50 x 10^3 N/C. Both fields point in the same direction. A positive 1.8-µC charge moves at a speed of 2.60 x 10^6 m/s in a direction that is perpendicular to both fields. Determine the magnitude of the net force that acts on the charge.
________N

b.) At New York City, the earth's magnetic field has a vertical component of 5.2 10-5 T that points downward (perpendicular to the ground) and a horizontal component of 1.8 10-5 T that points toward geographic north (parallel to the ground). What is the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force on a 7.0 m long, straight wire that carries a current of 29 A perpendicularly out of the ground?
magnitude ________ N
direction __________ (north east south or west)

Explanation / Answer

F = qE + qvxB

a) assume E and B are along x-axis, v is along y-axis

Fx = qE = 1.8x10-6 x 5.50 x 103 = 9.9x10-3 N

Fz = qvB = 1.8x10-6 x2.60x106 x1.2x10-3 = 5.616x10-3 N

F = sqrt(Fx2 +Fz2 ) = 1.138 x10-2 N

b) F = l IxB

because of the cross product, only the horizontal component will produce the force (toward west direction)

F = 7.0 x 29 x 1.8 x10-5 = 3.654 x 10-3 N
