Question

We saw that a person’s reaction time is generally not quick enough to allow them to catch a dollar bill dropped between the fingers. A demonstration of reaction time is to hold one end of a dollar bill so that it hangs lengthwise below your fingers, then ask a friend to hold his fingers near the center of the bill. When you release the bill, he is to try to catch it. If a typical reaction time in this case is 0.20 s, how long would a bill need to be for a person to have a good chance of catching it?
Answer needs to be in two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

From the equations of motion, y = vi *t +| (1/2) g t^2

y = 0 + (1/2) gt^2

   = 0.5 * 9.8 * (0.2)^2

   = 0.196 m

    = 19.6 cm

Distance of the top of bill from center = 19.6 cm Total length of the bill = 2 * 19.6 cm                                   = 39.2 cm
