Question

Please Solve this stairs problem for me.

You are hired as a contractor to create the layout for a straight run staircase in a residential home in Brooklyn, New York. The total vertical distance between finish floors in the residence is 11'-9". As the contractor you are responsible to: 1) calculate the total number of risers in the stairway, 2) give the measurement of each riser, 3) the width of each tread and 4) the total run of the stairway (the horizontal distance). 2R + T = 25" Show all calculations. Draw at a scale of 1/4" = 1'-0" a longitudinal section through the total run of the staircase. ***Please note in your drawing, the thickness of the finish floor at the bottom and top of the staircase is 1'-0".*** You need to note as shown in the example below the dimensions of the typical tread width riser height and total run of the staircase. Place the drawing on a typical 8.5" times 11" paper.

Explanation / Answer

Here i only provide you calculations ,

2R + T = 25 inch ( Basic rule in stairs )

Generally in residential buildngs , rise provide is between 6 inch to 8 inch

Let us take the rise of 8 inch

So 1) Total No. of rise in staircase = 11 ft 9 inch / 8 inch = 17.6 = 18 risers each of 8 inch

Now Limit of 12 stairs in a single flight

So we have to provide a landing after 12

Let us take a dog legged stair

3) Width of stairs in residential buildings is generally 2 ft 6 inch

Now Dimesions of landing = 2 ft 6 inch X 5 ft

2) Measurement of each riser = 8 inch Tread x 8 inch Riser

4) Total runway = 8 inch X 12 = 8 ft in one flight

and = 8 inch X 6 = 4 ft in other flight

Total runway = 12 ft
