a) at midspan, moment will be positive,i.e., top flange will be in compression. Hence beam wil behave as flanged beam

Per ACI 318 the effective flange width is governed by minimum of the values below:

- span/4 = 18/4 = 4.5'

- 2*1/2*clear distance of web + web width = 20'

- 2x6xhf + 12 = 72" = 6'

Therfore,effective flange width = 4.5' = 54"

b) At column support, there will be negative moment and hence the beam will behave as a rectangular beam. Effective flange width = web width = 12"
