Oracas pick up the contaminants through the food they eat.Orcas prey on salmons,marine mammals,seals and sea lionsand porpoises.It must have picked up high levels of PCBs and PBDEs from mammals it feded on the places it visited.

PCBs (widely used as capacitors,electrical transformers which later dumped into oceans and burnt) and PBDEs are persistent organic pollutants.When they arrive in marine waters they dont sink in water immediately and also dont get washed out simply. Instead, these are fat soluble compounds which get chemically attached to molecules produced by living organisms.As a result orcas show a high level of PCBs and PBDEs also because it the highest level of carnivore in the pyramid diagram.
