Question

(a) Give a suitable steel cross-section for the arch and the bottom chord. The crosssectional dimensions and type of steel used should be detailed.

(b) Select suitable cross-section(s) of the vertical hangers and type of steel used.

For a 100m pan steel arch bridge construction, shown in Figure 1, the sub-structure is made of reinforced concrete abutments. The overall height of the arch at mid span is 15m. As a Materials Engineer for the project, you have already produced a report on the requirements of concrete for the abutments in Part 1 (Assignment 1). In Part 2, you are now required to produce a report that incorporates the steel arches, vertical suspensions pinned and roller supports. You are also asked to produce a 'steel' specification. Explanation / Answer

a. For the arch section and bottom chord the hollow tubular sections shall be used. Connections of the members shall be welded at shop. Since the bridge is over a water channel (river crossing) it shall be protected for corrosion (either galvanised and pained or suitable corrosive resistant paint shall be used.

For the top arch SHS 250x250x10 can be used and for bottom chord SHS220X220X10 can be used confirming to 4923 ST 310 Grade.

b. for the vertical hanger mild steel rods (solid) of 25mm dia can be used. Mild steel shall be with minimum yield strength of 250MPa.
