Question
Siltstone, sandstone and conglomerate are made up of particles that tend to be rounded (like spheres). Shale is made of clay particles, which have a large surface area compared to their thickness (like a piece of paper). Clay particles also tend to adsorb water and are usually not as strong as rounded particles. When clay deposits are lithified (compacted and cemented into rock), the clay particles tend to line up (like cards in a deck of cards). Which type of rock(s) do you think would be more prone to slipping along bedding planes? Why? Which type of rock(s) do you think would have the least strength? Why?
Explanation / Answer
metamorphic rocks are the rocks which are more slip along the bedding plane because They may be formed simply by being deep beneath the Earth's surface, subjected to high temperatures and the great pressure of the rock layers above it
when they are subjected to tectonic forces they are easy liable to slip along bedding planes
example rocks are schistose,quartzite
sedimentary rocks will have the least strength because sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of that material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water
they do not form due to soldification process hence on applying loads these rocks were easily breakable
examples : claystone , sandstone , mud rocks
