Question

Diffusion in solids can be described by two different mechanisms (1) vacancy diffusion and (2) interstitial diffusion. These two mechanisms can be used in engineering processes of which two are of interest to study. Vacancy diffusion can be used to join two metals that may not be easily joined through conventional welding technics. For example aluminum can be welded to titanium through diffusion. Interstitial diffusion can be used to strengthen a material and modify the ductility as seen in plain carbon steel alloys. Based on your associated influences the process. These typically being time, temperature, and pressure. Time and temperature are rather obvious, the pressure parameter may require some thought.

Explanation / Answer

Hi,

PLZ GIVE THUMBS UP.

Plz post if any difficulties.

Thanks.

In case of diffusion process, time will depend on the diffusion coefficient. Also with the increase in the temperature the rate of diffusion increases as the atoms will start moving at a faster rate. With the increase in pressure the process of difusion will take place at a faster rate since the internal forces will be restrained.
