Question

They hire you to dimension a trapezoidal channel in grass to supply a irrigable area of 300 Ha, which will be irrigated with a module of 30 liters / s / ha. The irrigation area is 100m from the river that will provide the irrigation water and the soil that is found is resistant to erosion and, according to the recommendation of the environmental consultant, should contain buffalo grass grass 10cm high. The slope of the channel is S = 2.7%, while the geotechnical study recommends a lateral slope angle, whose tangent is ideally 0.5 (for both slopes). If the cost of personnel, operation and excavation machinery is $ 20.9 per cubic meter. Is a budget of $ 45 thousand sufficient to realize the trapezoidal channel? What happens if you need to size a triangular channel? Would the budget be enough? If the soil were not resistant to erosion, what would happen to the dimensions of the canals? (It is not necessary to perform the calculations, you can only make comments). What type of plant would you suggest to lower digging costs?

Explanation / Answer

Answer:-

1- As per the given data for the analysis bydget cost is $ 45 thousand and the unit cost is $ 20.9 per cubic meter so by considering the 100 m length of the chanel we can get the Area which can be $ 45000 / $ 20.9 / M3 = 2153.11 m3. Hence the Excavation quantity will be 2153.11 m3 and we have a length of chanel. A = 2153.11 m3 /100 m = 21.53 m2 . So we can state that the budgeted amount is sufficinet to realize the tapezoidal section of the chanel .

2- If we need to decide the trangular chanel , we required the same area to pass a flow in the chanel to fulfil the requirement of irrigation area which is 100 Ha. but in case of triangular chanel we can't excavated the exact space for the triangular chanel so in this case the excavation quanity will be increased so the $ 45000 will not be sufficient to realize the budget to be enough.

3- If the soil were not resitant to erosion it will definitely affect the dimensions of the chanel , the dimension of the chanel will get increased with respect to the shape of the chanel. the soil will get the cut in side and due the erosion dimension will be increased.

4- I would recomend the Trapezoidal trencher machine or Triangular trencher machine to excvated the chaneel to lowering the digging cost. it will help to excavated the exact area as per requirement and our excvation cost will be lower.
