Hi,

Roundabouts or rotary island is provided when the traffic flow in all directions is significant i.e, when intersections and signals are not effective. This is surely heplful in this cases as distribution of traffic flow is made uniform.

For larger roundabouts, pedestrian islands at each entry/exit encourage drivers to slow and prepare to enter the circle. They also provide a refuge where pedestrians may pause mid-crossing.

The problems discussed above are completely solved using this concept. Even when the traffic flow is high or in peak hours, the flow is uninterrupted unless and until vehicle wants to change his lane i.e, from farther lane towards inner lane.

Proper designs are developed for central island diameter which increases as the traffic flow increases.
