T-Mobile LTE 11:26 PM 73% HW2 Details & Information 17 Fall Civil Engineering Materials-Section01 HW2 Due 9/26/17 2Attempts Available 11:59 PM Late Submissions Accepted Instructions Failure occurs when a structure or device has been used past the limits of design that inhibits proper function. If a structure is designed to only support a certain amount of stress, strain, or loading and the user applies greater amounts, the structure will begin to deform and eventually fail. Several factors contribute to failure including a flawed design, improper use, financial costs, and miscommunication. (from wiki) This homework ask you to find one civil engineering failure case, write a short summary about the failure, focus on what type of failure and why did it happen. Make sure you cite your references, and don't directly copy and past. Instead, use your own words to give the basic ideas of the original reading. Format requirement: typed in word, note, or other common text editor, one page, single spaced, 12 font. Slide to start attempt 1

Explanation / Answer

In my area I have observed a failure of the building which is multi storie of 5 floors. It is failed due to differential settlement. Differential settlement occurs when a soil is capacity in not enough to bear the load of the structure. It occured because, engineer when doing soil survey, he did not taken care on the certain things. Hence false report has been generated. Eventhough soil not sufficient to bear that load, report showing that soil has enough strength. So, soil report is most important while construction. Because all the load must be transferred to soil lastly. So, that soil should be adequately enough to bear that load and engineer there should take care of these. Hence soil report mucst be carefully done and thouroughly followed.
