Question

Problem 1 The cantilever beam below has b-12 in, and h 18 in. and contains 3 #7 bars that are anchored in the column by standard 90° hooks, as shown. Normal weight concrete of compressive strength of 4.5 ksi and steel conforming to ASTM A615 Gr. 60 has been used. The clear cover to the side of the hook is 2 ¾ in. The clear cover to the bar extension beyond the bend is 2 in. The joint is enclosed by ties at 6 in. O.c. The beam has #3 double-leg stirrups @ 7.5" o.c. This cantilever beam has already been constructed but the owner is concerned about its compliant to ACI 318 and has asked you, the engineer, to address the following: a. Are the longitudinal bars sufficiently developed/anchored within the column? b. Are the longitudinal bars sufficiently developed/anchored within the beam? 18 in 48 in 3#7 2 in. (clear cove) 7.5 in 2 in. (clear cover) 2 in. 6 in 18 in #3, double legs Side cover-24 in for columns and 2 in. for beams Beam width 12 in. This figure below is only to clarify what is the side cover Side cover on hook

Explanation / Answer

for 90o bend in column minimum length should be 4*dia of bar which is greater then provided hence it is not sufficient.

for beam it should be 5 d hence provided one is not sufficient
