Need help with the explanations for these improvements of quality of concrete in construction? ( please give any preferces if possible) Thanks!
STEPS TO IMPROVE QUALITY STANDARDS IN CONSTRUCTION
1.Volume batching of materials should be avoided
2.All construction works should be done according to new and updated ACI code.
3.A quality engineer should monitor all the process
4.While adding water to concrete exact w/c ratio shoud be maintained as perACI provisions
5.While removing form work engineer should check the structure had gained the adequate strength or not.
6.In the construction of high rise building all the standards as mentioned in ACIshould be strictly followed
7.Curing should be done upto the prescribed period according to climatic conditions
8.All the quality standards are clearly mentioned in different ACI codes for different type of works.So the government should ensure that all the standards are followed or not by proper monitoring all the construction works at regular intervals.
Explanation / Answer
1) volume batching of material should be avoided : Yes it true that volume batching of material should be avoided and weight batching must be preferred.
Generally volume batching is preferred in general construction due to the reason that it is easier, faster and simpler to measure the volume of ingredients (cement,coarse and fine aggregate,etc) in it but it does not provide accuracy in measurement. HOW : when batching by volume is used,possible sources of error could lead to variation in the amount of aggregate in a specific volume and errors in measured volume.These errors often lead to variations in the fresh and hardened properties of concrete as against specified characteristics properties which ultimately affect strength of concrete.similarly volume of water is not specified and this makes concrete non uniform and reduce strength.
whatever the problems arises in volume batching it overcomes in weight batching.Though weight batching involves tedius work that is transporting the material to weighing machine,weighing,if it exceeds the desired amount,it has to be unloaded etc,but it is recommended due to its greater accuracy and preventing the problem created by bulking of damp sand.
for same mix proportion, the compressive strength of concrete batched by weight is higher than that batched by volume at all W/C ratios and for curing ages 7-28 days.

2) All construction works should be done according to new and updated ACI code : Yes, ACI 318-14 (building code requirements for structural concrete ) should be used for all construction work,as it provides minimum requirements necessary to provide public health and safety for the design and construction of structural concrete building due to which work carried out smoothly and with safety measures.
Every work becomes successful,if it is provided with proper guidelines. And ACI serves the same purpose.

3) A quality engineer should monitor all the process : Yes,Quality Engineer should monitor all the process in order to maintain a highest quality in the construction projects which is must in every construction. All the process involves quality,right from the raw materials provided by the suppliers to the output in the form of construction provided to the customer.
HOW: Quality engineer should work with the supply chain to ensure the quality of raw materials or components meets the company quality standards and accordingly implement the inspection processes to monitor the incoming material.if there is any issue regarding quality,quality engineer has to take corrective and preventive measures.
similarly quality standards provide guidance and tools for companies that want to ensure their products and services meet the customer's requirement.quality engineer monitor feedback from customers and resolves if any issue arises.
It is the duty of quality engineer to see wheather the construction works are going on as per proper standards and specifications or not.If not he has to deal with it and correct it accordingly.
Quality engineer must focus on to eliminate the causes of quality issues in all respect and reduce the risk of failure.

4) while adding water to concrete exact W/C ratio should be maintained as per ACI provisions :Properties of concrete much get affected with the W/C ratio. therefore it is of atmost importance to maintain proper ratio of water to cement.
What is water cement ratio: ratio of amount of water to the amount of cement used is called water to cement ratio.
The water cement ratio largely determines the strength and durability of the concrete when it is cured.
Greater the amount of water in the concrete mix ,the more dilute the cement paste will be, this not only affect the compressive strength,it also affects the tensile and flexural strengths, the porosity, the shrinkage and the colour.
The more the W/C ratio is increased that is the more water is added for a fix amount of cement,the more the strength of resulting concrete is reduced.
Using a low W/C ratio is the usual way to achieve a high strength and high quality concrete,but it does not guarantee that the resulting concrete is always appropriate.
hence exact W/C ratio should be maintained as per ACI provisions.
