Question

Given: test cylinder is 4" diameter by 6" high with 60 ksi strength.

Beam cross section and test results:

Testing method: a three point bending test was performed on a seven foot beam which was supported 6" from each end. The beam was loaded directly in the middle of the six foot span. The beam was loaded at two kip incriments until the load reached 10 kips. At this time, the load was increased by one kip increments. The beam was loaded until failure.

Question: What is the maximum load, deflection, failure mode, etc.

Explanation / Answer

Maximum Load = Nearly 17000 lb (we can see this load from graph as after this there is a sharp decrease in the load )

Deflection at failure = Nearly 0.5 in (as seen in graph where the sharp 'v' point occurs)

Failure Mode = Brittle. This can be said beacuse the graph take a sharp plung after the failure. Had it been ductile, the graph would have had a increase in displacement with almost constant load taken.
