Question
You are a Civil Engineer visiting a potential construction site. You receive a call from your manager to develop a rough estimate of how many cubic yards of dirt will be needed to top off the site with 6 inches of sifted loam. The site is roped off with pegs and string so you know the boundaries. You do not have a transit, or anything with length measure available. You do have your engineering notebook and are able to physically walk the site. There is no wireless at the site. Describe how you would fulfill your manager’s request. Be sure to document any assumptions, measurements’ etc. and what formula’s you would use so your manager will have confidence in your estimate.
Explanation / Answer
As there is no length measuring devices not available .we can use our shoe size as length measuring instrument ,walk along the boundaries and count the length in terms of your shoe size ,,and then you can calculate volume required easily by length *bredth * 6 inches
