Fundamentals of Microelectronics By Razavi - Exercise 17.26 (2nd edition, same as exercise 16.26 in 1st edition)

The chegg has a solution manual for the exercise 17.26, according to the solution, the circuit doesn't behave better. But I think when the bottom terminal of the speaker is attached to Vdd rather than to ground, the drain voltage Vd is 'almost' same as Vdd so driving the transistor into saturation region. (Since the speaker acts as a resistor, it becomes parallel resistor with 1k ohm resistor. Therefore the circit does operate.)  Am I right? I guess the solution is incorrect. If you help me, I will be very much obliged. Have a good day! : )

Explanation / Answer

Yes You are correct. Circuit will work. But the razavi's solution is trying to say that the connection of bottom terminal to VDD will force VDS of the transistor nearly to VDD, which is also not a correct way of biasing the transistor. Thus connection to VDD does not solve the problem at all.
