Question
If experimental results for heat transfer over a flat plate with an extremely rough surface were found to be correlated by an expression of the form Nu = 0.04Re^09 Pr^1/3 where Nu = hL/k and Re = u_infintiy L / V. The air flowing over the surface has a temperature of 300 K, a velocity of 10 m/s, and the surface has a length of 1 m and a surface area of 1m^2. Just enough energy is supplied to maintain the wall's steady-state temperature at 310 K. (a) Determine the average heat transfer coefficient (h)over the flat plate surface, in W/m^2 K. Determine the rate of heat must be supplied to the surface for these conditions, in W.Explanation / Answer
Solution:
Given : u= 10m/s L=1m ; v=15.89 x 10^-6
a) Re = u L/v
= 6.293 X 10^5
Pr= 0.7
Nu = 0.04 (6.293 x 10^5)^0.9 (0.7)^0.33
= 5880.50
hL/k = 5880.5
h= 154.657 W/m2K
b)
Q = h a (tf- ti)
= 154.657 (1) (310-300)
=1546.5723 W.
