Question

One Uofl alumni works for power plant systems. He would like to design a vapor power plant with two stage turbines (high pressure turbine and low pressure turbine, called a reheat cycle) and combined with one open-feedwater system to increase thermal efficiency of his vappor power plants (For answering below. needs to find all necessary properties in given table) His vapor power cycle is operated under the following conditions. Steam at 100 bars and 600 degree C (state 5) is expanded to 10 bars (state 6/7) where a portion is bled to a single open feedwater heater (state 6) The remaining portion is reheated to 540 degree C and 10 Bars (state 8) and is expanded to 0.08 bar (state 9) All cycles follow the ideal Ranking reheat/regeneration cycles, except low pressure turbine where the exit status (low pressure turbine exit) turns into the saturated vapor (state 9) because of irreversibility of low pressure turbine All pump inletassumed to the saturated liquids. Calculate a) The fraction of the total flow bled to the open feedwaer heater. b) The total of two tubines work output perunit mass [kj/kg] c) the total of two pumps work inputs per unit mass [kj/kg] d) the termal efficiency of the cycle e) show the cycle on a T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines

Explanation / Answer

here work input for pump 1 is = 2nd turbine output = mcph1

where h is the enthalpy at pump 1

for unit mass work input is equal to enthalpy.

for pump 2 =mcph3

work output at turbine is also same as pump but considering the enthalpies at outlet.

therefore for turbine 1 the work output is 8135.

and for turbine 2 the work output is 7773.
