Question
The hydraulic circuit below has the following characteristic The pump is adding 6 hp to the fluid. The pump flowrate is 40 gpm. The pipe has an inside diameter of 1 in. between points (1) and (2), and an inside diameter of 0.75 in, from point (2) through hydraulic motor and back to the tank. The specific gravity of the hydraulic oil is 0.9. The kinematic viscosity of the oil is 100 cs. Pipes 4, 5, and 6 have length of 4ft, 20ft, and 30ft, respectively. Assume all elbows are standard with a loss coefficient of 0.9. If the vent is closed, and the tank is pressurized to a value of 15 psig, what is the pressure available at (2), just before the motor? You may assume a pressure drop of 1 psi across the entrance (and exit) of the pipes within the reservoir. If the motor is turned off and flow is allowed to proceed steadily through the entire circuit, what is the resulting heat generation rate in the entire circuit? You may assume all pipes are made of commercial steel. The loss coefficient associated with running the motor may be assumed to be K = 2.5. Remember that 1 hp = 42.4 btu/min.Explanation / Answer
