I did a mold of aluminium in my college, and they teach us the theory, so I hope that I can help you with this:

-the advantage is the metal is going to cool at the same rate in all the mold, If you do this process quickly you can get all the mold at the same temperature, but the problem is that is more possible to make air burbles inside, or you can make that one part of the mold dont have metal for doing very fast

-If you use sand for the mold and you pre heat you can get off humidity, so is more probable to the mold to become good, and I don´t see a lot of problem from pre heating, only the fact that the metal is going to take more time for cooling

-using higher speeds in permanent mold causes more quality in the product, but the cost is higher to, so this is only used in products that you need to have more quality and less corrocion, so the expendable mold is used with parts that you can repair later and the quality is not a big deal

-This is the most difficult to me, I thing that a problem would be for safe to the people that interact with the mold, if it take too much time to cooling is more probable to people get heated with it, but I don´t very sure for this to be honest
