Question
Need some help with this problem, I can't figure out how to get theanswer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have the answersand have tried to work the problem out several times, but I can'tfigure out how to get them.A 3.00kg object moving in the positive x-direction with a velocityof +5.00 m/s collides with and sticks to a 2.00kg object initiallymoving in the negative y-direction with a velocity of -3.00 m/s.Find the components of velocity of the composite object.
The answers are : V(fx) = 3.00 m/s V(fy) = -1.20m/s
Again, I just need someone to go through the processmathematically. Thanks
Explanation / Answer
This question is a combination of vectors and the law ofconservation of momentum. m1 =3kg ; v1= + 5 m/s i m2 =2kg ; v2= - 3 m/s j Now we use the law of conservation of momentum. for completely inelasticcollisions:- m1v1+ m2v2 =( m1 + m2) v (3)(5m/si) + (2)(-3m/s j) = (3+2)v 15m/si - 6m/sj = 5 v v= 15m/s i - 6m/s j 5 v = 3 m/s i - 1.2 m/s j Hope this makes it clear.......Good Luck :-) Hope this makes it clear.......Good Luck :-)Related Questions
