Question

The drawing shows a rectangular piece of wood. The forcesapplied to corners B and D have the samemagnitude and are directed parallel to the long and short sides ofthe rectangle. An axis of rotation is shown perpendicular to theplane of the rectangle at its center.
Relative to this axis, the force at corer D produces thetorque with the greater magnitude A force is to be applied to corner A, directed alongthe short side of the rectangle. The net torque produced by thethree forces is zero. The force at corner A is directedfrom A toward B. The magnitudes of the forces at corners B andD are each 14.0 N. The long side of the rectangle is threetimes as long as the short side. Find the magnitude and directionof the force applied to corner A. magnitude = ____________N toward corner B. I thought I should setup the equation as: (14 N *3) - (14 N) - (x) = 0 x = 28. That is incorrect.

Explanation / Answer

it is 14*3-14*1 - A*3 = 0 A = 9.3 N
