Question

A car is designed to get its energy from a rotating flywheel (soliddisk) with a radius of 1.00 m and a massof 550 kg. Before a trip, the flywheel isattached to an electric motor, which brings the flywheel'srotational speed up to 4500 rev/min. (a) Find the kinetic energy stored in theflywheel.
1
Your response differs from the correct answerby orders of magnitude. J

(b) If the flywheel is to supply energy to the car as would a15.0-hp motor, find the length of time thecar could run before the flywheel would have to be brought back upto speed.

Explanation / Answer

I started by using the equations KE= (1/2) I (W^2) I= (1/2) M (R^2) M= 550 kg R=1.0 m w= 4500 rev/min-> converted to rad/sec by mult(2pi/60) = 471 rad/sec THEN for b P= KE (answer from a)/ T I have tried the problem about 5 different ways... I can't geta correct so I don't know b either. Will you please show me the correct way to solve?? Thankyou in advance!
