Question
In line with current controversies about the limits of the law, moral reasoning, personal freedom, and the beginning of human life, think about the following scenario: Susan has been arrested for possession of crack cocaine and tested positive. At the time, she was three months pregnant. She’ll face incarceration for the duration of the pregnancy and her rights as a parent will be terminated immediately after delivery based on the premise that she’s abusing her child. Do you feel the authorities have the right to intervene? Write a response (about 3/4-1 page) focusing on this issue. For full points your response should include a discussion about prenatal development and the effect of this particular teratogen during prenatal development. Remember these assignments should reflect your growing understanding of the course content. What if it wasn't an illegal drug such as crack cocaine, but alcohol or tobacco? Would your argument be different? Why or Why not? This should also include a discussion about how these particular teragotens affect development.
Explanation / Answer
Taking drugs is prohibited and nonsocial behavior. Susan is a judiciary and social criminal. Her offense also exceeds when she is taking drugs under pregnancy. Under such circumstances, no authority can intervene in the matter because the case also socially prohibited. Doctors also prescribed not to take alcohol during pregnancy and even they indicate not to take any medicine without their knowledge. Any drug, medicine, and alcohol can create tumor or mutation in the offspring. Drugs like cocaine and heroin are highly cancer causatives. Cocaine produces reactive oxygen species which can delete nucleotides of DNA and then make mutation. That is cocaine-induced genotoxicity. Therefore, under such non-behavioral and unethical issue, Susan’s should imprison with termination of her rights. The case may consider in future if she able totally to avoid drugs intake.
