Question

The following question ask for your opinion and may have more than one "correct" answer.
For pH, 7.0 is neutral and is the pH of plain water with no acids or bases in it. How would you expect photosynthesis to be affected by a change in pH?
a. Higher and lower pH values will raise the rate of photosynthesis.
b Higher pH raises the rate of photosynthesis and lower pH lowers the rate.
c. Higher and lower pH values will lower the rate of photosynthesis.
d. The pH has no effect on this process.

Please provide a detailed, complete explanation.

Explanation / Answer

The answer is b. The reason why this is, is because neutral pH is optimum for most plants, pH affects how proteins work (enzymes are proteins, and they are involved in photosynthesis). Too high/low of a pH will denature proteins. so therefore Higher pH raises the rate of photosynthesis and lower pH lowers the rate.
