5. This is Thornton and Rex #5-46. Calculate the de Brogliewavelength of a 5.5 Mev particle emitted from an241Am nucleus. Could this particle exist inside thatnucleus? (Hint: To answer that question, use the diameter of thenucleus as x = 1.6*10-14 m and find the minimumkinetic energy (nonrelativistic calculation is okay) allowed withinthat distance according to the (one dimensional) uncertaintyprinciple.)
Thanks
Explanation / Answer
Modified : ---------- energy of the particle E = 5.5 Mev = 5.5* 1.6 * 10 ^-13 J = 8.8* 10 ^ -13 J wavelength = h / [ 2mE ] where m = mass of particle = 4 * 1.67 * 10 ^ -27kg = 6.68 * 10 ^ -27 kg h= planck's constant = 6.625 * 10 ^ -34 J s plug th evalues = ( 6.625 * 10 ^ -34 ) / 10.84 *10 ^ -20 = 0.61116 * 10 ^ -14 mRelated Questions
