Question

A bar magnet is placed in a uniform magnetic field (Bextemal in the figure). Given the orientation of the magnet and the direction of the external magnetic field, which one of the following statements regarding net force and torque is correct? 16. exiernal The bar magnet will experience a clockwise torque only. The bar magnet will experience a net force in A B C D E the direction of Bextemal only. Both the net force and the torque on the bar magnet are zero. The bar magnet will experience a counterclockwise torque only. The bar magnet will experience a net force opposite the direction of Bextemal only

Explanation / Answer

When we put bar magnet in external magnetic field as shown, then north pole of the bar magnet attracted to the external south pole i.e downwards and south pole of bar magnet attracted to external noth pole i.e upwards.

The forces experienced by the poles due to external magnetic field are equal and opposite, hence there is no force acting on bar magnet, but as the line of action of the two forces are different, hence a torque acting on bar magnet in clockwise direction.

Option (a) is correct.
