Question
please explain why the correct answer is E. Thank you!!
Three blocks- A, B, and C- have equal masses sub es and are placed in a tank of water. Block A floats hat. at the surface of the water. Block B is fully submerged and suspended halfway between the e blon thbottom of the tank. Block C is fully submerged and sits at the bottom of the tank. A three blocks are at rest. What is the correct surface ranking of the buoyant forces on these blocks? ituation is not possible -if the blocks have the same mass, they should all either float on the surface or sink to the bottom B AExplanation / Answer
Buoyant Force on a mass = (Density of the fluid * volume of the fluid displace* acceleration deu to gravity)
For block A and block B the net force is zero as the weight of the body is equal to the buoyant force. Volume of both the mass is different hence the one is fully submerged while other is half submerged.
Note:Buoyant Force dependes on the volume of the liquid displace and not on the volume of the body. For bloack B, as it is full submerged volume of the liquid displaced equals the volume of the liquid.
For Block C Buoyant force is less than the weight of the body and hence it reaches the bottom of the tank.
P.S
Buoyant force doesn't depend on the overall depth of the object submerged. In other words, as long as the can of beans is fully submerged, bringing it to a deeper and deeper depth will not change the buoyant force. This might seem strange since the pressure gets larger as you descend to deeper depths. But the key idea is that the pressures at the top and bottom of the can will both increase by the same amount and therefore cancel, leaving the total buoyant force the same.
