Explanation / Answer

Given

out door temperature T = 31.5 0C

time taken to hear Hello , echo is t = 2.55 s

Part (a)

speed of sound in air at 0 C is v = 332 m/s

from the relation V = 332+0.6 m/s 0C *T

at temperature 31.5 0 C , the speed of sound is

V = 332+0.6*31.5 m/s = 350.9 m/s

Part (b)

the distance from the canyon wall is d = ?

V = 2d/t

2d = V*t

d = V*t/2

d = 350.9*2.55/2 m

d = 447.3975 m/s

Part (c)

now the temperatue is T = -8.5 0C

the speed is

V = 332+0.6*(-8.5) m/s

V = 326.9 m/s

time ,t = 2d/v =2*447.3975/326.9 s

t = 2.7372 s
