Question

29-2 CHAPTRR 29 The Electric Potentia 2. Charge q is fired through a small hole in the positive plate of a capacitor. a. If q is a positive charge, does it speed up or slow down inside the capacitor? Answer this question twice i. Using the concept of force. I+ spe ue to the Positive Plate oe i. Using the concept of energy. dvacian of de o b. Repeat part a for q as a negative charge 3. Charge q is fired toward a stationary positive point charge. a. If q is a positive charge, does it speed up or slow down as it approaches the stationary charge? Answer this question twice: i. Using the concept of force. ii. Using the concept of energy b. Repeat part a for q as a negative charge.

Explanation / Answer

2)a)

i) positive charge q when passes through positive plate of capacitor it is repelled by positive charge on positive plate and attracted by negative charge on negative plate so it's a speed increases.

ii)By concept of energy we can explain it as when charge moves from positive plate to negative plate the work is done by electric field on charge and that is equal to increase in kinetic energy. We can also say as when charge goes from positive to negative plate it goes its potential energy decreases and that is equal to increase in kinetic energy.

b) for negative charge if it goes from positive plate to negative plate its speed decreases since the negative charge is attracted by positive charge on positive plate and repelled by negative charge on negative plate causing decrease in speed.

3) a) the speed of positive charge will slow down because it will be repaired by stationary positive charge in opposite direction.

b) by concept of energy we can say that as moving charge approaches stationary charge its potential energy increases and kinetic energy decreases which causes its speed to slow down.
