Apparatus: Several coils, bar magnet, small compass, horseshoe magnet, galvanometer, switch, 850 Universal Interface (battery eliminator), iron bar, wire, PVC pipe and pickup coil, Science Workshop interface and associated cables. Part L- 1: 1. Hook up the galvanometer in series with the switch and the battery. Quickly tap on the switch so that it briefly makes contact and sends a very short pulse of current through the circuit. The needle on the galvanometer should deflect to the left or right. Too much current can easily damage a galvanometer so it is important that only a quick pulse of very low current is sent through it. Examine the circuit you constructed and determine the direction of current flow through the galvanometer. Write a short statement below describing the relationship between the direction of current flow and the direction the galvanometer needle deflects. Reverse the flow in the circuit and again send a quick, small pulse of current through the galvanometer to verify that the needle deflects the other way. 2. During the past two labs we have studied the magnetic fields produced by currents. A question that might have occurred to you is: "Can a current be produced by a magnetic field?" Hold a wire stationary in a strong magnetic field as shown in figure 1 and see if the galvanometer records a current. What did you observe?
