Question
8. A municipal wastewater treatment plant generally operates at 10,000 m3/day, but has a 12,000-mº/day capacity. (a) What is the maximum additional discharge that the plant may receive from a neighboring industry? (b) Determine the characteristics of this industrial wastewater given the information below. (c) What can you say about the nature of the industrial discharge: is it acidic or alkaline? Why? (10) Industry on-line (at full capacity) Industry off-line (i.e., no industrial discharge) 12,000 10,000 350 300 Flow, m'/day BOD5, mg/L TSS, mg/L Alkalinity, mg/L as CaCO3 300 200 50 150Explanation / Answer
a) industry offline capacity = 10,000 m3/d
Industry online capacity = 12000 m3/d
Thus maximum additional discharge from industry = 12000 -10000= 2000m3/d
b) BOD5 of industrial waste water = (12000*350 -( 10000 * 300))/2000 = 600 mg/l
TSS of industrial waste water = (12000*300-(10000*200))/2000= 800 mg/l
Water is highly acidic as there is reduction in alkalinity of water.
c) Industrial waste water discharge is acidic in nature as it has reduced the alkalinity of industry off line water.
