Compaction: A technique used to eliminate air in soil using external force The aim of this technique is to increase the dry unit weight of soil. This technique is related with the water content of the soil. Water softens the soil and moves it into a more densely packed position. At the beginning of the test, Vary increases as water content increases. After a certain point, the relationship between them becomes inverse. There are 2 types of compaction tests: 1. Standard Proctor 2. Modified Proctor We conducted standard proctor test in the laboratory Procedure: 1. Add water to the soil sample and mix them thoroughly 2. Measure the weight of the empty mold. 3. Fill half of the mold with the wet soil sample 4. Pull the hammer to the top and release it 25 times while rotating it in a circular manner 5. Put another layer in the mold and apply 25 blows with the hammer. 6. Add the third layer any apply 25 blows with the hammer again. 7. Disassemble the mold and remove the excess soil protruding from the top. 8. Measure the weight of the mold with the wet soil sample in it. 9. Take two samples from the mold; one by digging the top part a bit until you reach the middle of the soil, another from the bottom middle part. 10. Put the samples in two separate containers and weigh them 11. Repeat part 1-10 at least 4 times. 12. Put the containers with the wet samples into the oven to dry 13. The conclusion from the graph which is plotted from the given values attained by conducting standard proctor test is that at 13.25% optimum moisture content, the given soil type will become most dense and achieve its maximum dry density which is determined as 17.25KN/m3
