Question

Three concentric conducting spherical shells have radii a, b,and c such that a<b<c. Initially, the inner initial isuncharged, the middle shell has a positive charge Q, and the outershell has a negative charge -Q. (a) Find the electric potential of the three shells. (b) If the inner and outer shells are now connected by a wirethat is insulated as it passes through the middle shell, what isthe electric potential of each of the three shells, and what is thefinal charge on each shell? Three concentric conducting spherical shells have radii a, b,and c such that a<b<c. Initially, the inner initial isuncharged, the middle shell has a positive charge Q, and the outershell has a negative charge -Q. (a) Find the electric potential of the three shells. (b) If the inner and outer shells are now connected by a wirethat is insulated as it passes through the middle shell, what isthe electric potential of each of the three shells, and what is thefinal charge on each shell?

Explanation / Answer

Initially, the potential between the inner & middle shellsis Q and between the middle & outer shells is 2Q. After connection by the insulated wire so that the outer andinner shells are electrically connected, the charge on both innerand outer shells becomes 0.5 Q ( negative) . So the potentialbetween inner & middle shells becomes 1.5Q andbetween middle & outer shells becomes 1.5 Q too.
