Question

Q.3 Two chambers are separated by a square opening and covered by a square gate hinged at top as shown in Fig. Q.3. The center of the opening coincides with the centre of the gate. The left chamber is filled with water while the right chamber is filled with Liquid X. Neglect the weight of the gate. (a) Find the resultant force exerted on the gate due to Liquid X and its location with respect to the hinge when Liquid X is filled to 4m high from the (6 marks) centreline of the gate. (b) Find the resultant force exerted on the gate due to water and its location with respect to the hinge when water level is 2m from the centreline of the (6 marks) opening. (c) Show that the gate is now closed. (3 marks) If water is added to the left chamber, determine the level h such that the gate starts to open to the right. (d) (10 marks) 0.8 x 0.8m square opening 4m 2m Water Liquid X of S.G. 0.8 1.2x 1.2m square gate Side view of the gate from the right chamber

Explanation / Answer

Given: Two chambers are seperated by square opening and covered by square gate hinged with given values.

Findout: Determine the level h such that gate starts to open to right.

Answer: By taking the all conditions a,b,c,d taken in account h level is calculated ,

With respect to hinge when Liquid X is filled at 4 m from the centerline gate is

h + 2 + 1.44 = 4.44 + 1.44 ( 1.44sqm square gate and 1.6sqm sq.opening)

h = 2.44 m

or

  The difference water table level for left and right chamber from hinge is X

4 + X = h + 2

h - X = 2

h = X + 2

here X = 4 -1.6 + 2

= 0.44 m

Therefore, h = 2.44 m
