Question
Two different objects are supplied with the same amount of heat.Which of the following could explain why their final temperaturesmight be different. (more than one answer may apply) pleaseexplain!a. They may havedifferent surface finishes b. They may havedifferent masses c. They may havedifferent volumes d. They may havedifferent Specific Heat Capacities e. They may havedifferent initial temperatures
Suppose you arehiking down the Grand Canyon. At the top, in the early morning, thetemperature is 3 degrees Celsius. At the bottom, in the afternoon,it is a sweltering 34 degrees C. What is the temperature differencein Fahrenheit? please explain
a. 142 degrees F b. 0 degrees F c. 5.4 degrees F d. 56 degrees F e. 61.2 degrees F
a. They may havedifferent surface finishes b. They may havedifferent masses c. They may havedifferent volumes d. They may havedifferent Specific Heat Capacities e. They may havedifferent initial temperatures
Explanation / Answer
1. (a) Surface finish can affect how much heat is absorbed, but in this case we are told both receive the same amount ofenergy. No effect. (b) Heat is energy, temperature is averageenergy (total/mass). Both are given the same total heat, butdifferent masses result in different temperatures. Doesaffect. (c) Different volumes does not implydifferent masses, so there is not necessarily a difference. Inothers words, it is not volume but mass that could affect it. (d) Q = mcT. Temperature (T) increases morewith the same heat (Q) and mass (m) but a lower specific heat (c).Does affect. (e) Heat results in a change intemperature. All else being equal, the two bodies will increase bythe same amount, maintaining the initial temperaturedifference. Does affect. 2. We have a difference of 31oC. Each degree changein Celcius is equal to 9/5 in Fahrrenheit, so the change is equalto 55 4/5oF (Choice (d)). Do not add 32 whencalculating temperature difference. It clearly cancels out if youconvert first: [(34)(9/5)+(32)] - [(3)(9/5)+(32)] = (34-3)(9/5) = (31)(9/5),which is what we did already.Related Questions
