Question

Two capacitors give an equivalent capacitanceof 9.00 pF when connected inparallel and an equivalent capacitance of 1.60 pF when connected in series. What is thecapacitance of each capacitor? smaller capacitor
Your answer differs from the correct answerby 10% to 100%. pF bigger capacitor
Your answer differs from the correct answerby 10% to 100%. pF

Your answer differs from the correct answerby 10% to 100%. pF

Explanation / Answer

in parallel:    .         C + c =  9.00          (I'musing C and c for the two capacitors) . in series:       1 / 1.60 = 1 / C + 1/c    or         1.60 = C c / ( C + c) . Now you have two equations and two unknowns... solve foreither C or c. .       1.60 = C c /9.00          14.4 = Cc           14.4= C (9.00 - C) .    or:        14.4 = 9.00 C   - C2          C2   - 9 C + 14.4 = 0 . you have a quadratic equation. Use the quadratic formula andyou get .       C =   2.08    or  6.92         which are the two capacitors.
