Question

i tried working out this question but not sure why i am notgetting the right answer Question is: A person hums into the top of a well and finds that standingwaves are established at frequencies of 42, 70.0 and 98 Hz thefrequency fo 42 Hz is not necessarily the fundemental frequency.the speed of sound is 343m/s. How deep is the well? i tried working out this question but not sure why i am notgetting the right answer Question is: A person hums into the top of a well and finds that standingwaves are established at frequencies of 42, 70.0 and 98 Hz thefrequency fo 42 Hz is not necessarily the fundemental frequency.the speed of sound is 343m/s. How deep is the well?

Explanation / Answer

Given that Teh speed of the sound (v) =343m/s The well acts as a one side open cylindrical tube The frequnices of concurrent harmonincs in well are 42Hz,70Hzand 90Hz Threfore the fundamental frequency of the well is                       f = (70Hz -42Hz)/2                         =14Hz The height of the well can be obtained from                       f =v/4L Then              L =v/4f                          =343m/s/4(14Hz)                          =343/56                           =6.125m
