Question

True orFalse?

Max and Moritz are twinastronauts who go to different planets. When Max arrivesat

planet A, he finds theground potential to be 1,000,000 V. Moritz ends up at planetB

which is like the Earthwith a ground potential of 0 V. On A Max touches a goldbracelet

insulated from the groundand at a potential of 1,000,001 V. On B Moritz touches agold

bracelet insulated fromthe ground and at a potential of 200 V. Clearly Moritz suffersa

real jolt, while Max feelsnothing.

If this statement is true, prove it. If false, show why it is false.

Explanation / Answer

Hey,
Yes, this statement is true and we can prove it using theequation V=IR, V being the potential difference, and I being thejolt the person will feel. Of course, we are assuming thatMax doesn't get fried as soon as he steps on Planet A, since thethe voltage difference between himself and the planet would beenormous. However, let's assume that by some miracle, when hesets foot on Planet A, he and the Planet are both at 1,000,000V. Then he touches a gold bracelet, which is insulated fromthe planet, and therefore, doesn't take on the same voltage as theplanet. Thus, subtract the voltage of the gold braceletfrom that of Max, and you get 1. Assuming a largeresistance, I will be rather small. Now, take Moritz, who is at 0 V, just like the planet he ison. Once he touches the gold bracelet, which is at 200 V,there will be a 200 V difference. Now, despitethe planet having resistant characteristics (big R), thevoltage is high enough that there will be a noticable jolt (largeenough I to hurt or kill). Hope this hopes.
