The problem I'm having is with Problem 64 in Chapter 21.The given info is:
an electric dipole has an electric dipole moment of p =5*10^-30
it is in an electric field, E = 1.6 * 10^6
part A asks to find the change in potential as the dipole movesparallel to the field to perpendicular...I can figure that out, theresult is U = 8*10^-24
but in Part B, it asks a weird question:
at what temperature T does the translational kinetic energy, 2/3kt,equal the change in U you found in part A?
you set it up like:
2/3kt = U
2/3kt = 8 * 10^-24
but at this point, the cramster solution subs in a value for kwithout explaining where it comes from.
k = -1.2 * 10^-23.
Where does this value of K come from? Thanks a lot!
Explanation / Answer
k is the Boltzmann constant, but it should be1.38E-23 J/K.Related Questions
