Chapter 27, Problem 37 Incorrect.

In figure 27-48, the resistances are R1 =1.0 and R2 = 1.9 , and the idealbatteries have emfs 1 = 3.0 V, and2 = 3 = 5.9 V. What are the(a) current (in A) in battery 1,(b) the current (in A) in battery 2 and(c) the current (in A) in battery 3?(d) What is the potential differenceVa - Vb (in V)?

Explanation / Answer

Applying the Kirchhoff's voltage law to the lefthand side loop we get            3.0V -(1.0)(I1) - (1.9)(I2) - 5.9V -(1.0)(I1) = 0                   2.0I1 + 1.9I2 = - 2.9 ....................... (1)
Applying the Kirchhoff's voltage law to the righthand side loop we get           5.9V -(1.0)(I3) - (1.9)(I2) -5.9V - (1.0)(I3) = 0                     1.9I2 + 2.0I3 = 0  ........................ (2) Applying the Kirchhoff's junction rule weget                I1 - I2 + I3 = 0 ....................... (3) Solving the eq (1), (2) and (3) we get the valuesof I1, I2 and I3
