Question
This is not for a test or homework, I just want to understand theconcept of acceleration. So if you can explain the concept ofacceleration by relating it to the statements below, it would helpa lot. thank you.True or False? Define east as the negative direction and westas the positive direction.
a) If a car is traveling east, its acceleration must beeastward
b) If a car is slowing down, its acceleration may be positive.
c)An object with constant nonzero acceleration can never stop andstay stopped.
I chose True for (a), False for (b), and False for (c),but I'm not sure if I'm correct.
Explanation / Answer
ok acceleration is the range is velocity over time so a)if a car is traveling east, the car can be slowing down(velocityis decreasing), or is going east at a constantvelocity(acceleration is 0) so false acceleration doesn't have tobe positive b)if a car is slowing down, is the west direction then it hasnegative velocity so in order to make it slow down you need toCHANGE the velocity to positive and that is done with positiveacceleration so b is true c)acceleration is the range is velocity over time so as long asacceleration is not 0 the velocity will keep changing so the objectcan never stay stopped it might stop for a short period of time butwill start moving again so c is false
