Question
An airplane flying horizontally at a constant speed of 350km/hover level ground releases a bundle of food supplies. Ignore theeffect of the air on the bundle. What are the bundle's initial (a)vertical and (b) horizontal components of velocity? (c) What is itshorizontal component of velocity just before hitting the ground?(d) If the airplane's speed were, instead,450 km/h would the timeof fall be longer, shorter, or the same? I wasn't there for any ofthis chapter and i dont even know where to begin so if someone canhelp me with the steps and show all work im hoping i can see how todo it. Thanks
Explanation / Answer
Parts A) and B) the bundle had only horizontal velocity when it was in theplane. so the initial velocity right after it leaves theplane is the same: vertical velocity is equal to zero andhorizontal velocity is 350km/hr. Part C) there is only acceleration in the vertical direction (gravity)which changes the vertical component of velocity. but sincewe are neglecting air resistance, there is no horizontalacceleration, which means that the horizontal velocity is constant.(350km/hr) Part D) if the airplane were traveling faster horizontally, that wouldn'tgive it any additional velocity in the vertical direction. thus in the vertical direction it would be the same free fallsituation. so no, the time to hit the ground would be thesame.
