Question
My professor lets ussee our exams whenever we want before we take it. I'manswering the questions, right now, before I take the exam and I amstuck on this one...Vectors A, B and C have magnitudes 6, 11 and 20. When these vectorsare added, what is the least possible magnitude of theirresultant?
a. 25
b. 15
c. 2
d. 3
I thought I just had to do R=A+B+C but the answer of that isn't oneof the choices.
Also,
A student adds 2 vectors with magnitudes of 200 and 40. Which oneof the following is the only possible choice for the magnitude ofthe resultant?
a. 100
b. 200
c. 260
d. 40
Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
Hi, The least possible magnitude of resultant willbe 20 - 11 -6 = 3 So your option will be d. For the second the possible choice is 200. If the two vectors are at anangle95.7o with each other, then the resultant will be R =[(200)2+(40)2+2(200)(40)cos95.7o] =[40000+1600+16000(-0.1)] =[40000+1600-1600] = 200 Hope this helps you.
