Question
A dog has a NM (neuromuscular) problem. She specifically has abnormal proteins that are binding to some of the ACH receptors on her motor end plates. This is the reason why she cannot walk. The vet gives her an injection, theorize what the vet could be injecting her to allow her to walk normally. *note: focus on idea NM junction and idea that the dog could use more ACH binding to ACH receptors
Also, show a diagram with labels at least 5 main events at the NM junction beginning with an AP (action potential) in a nerve and ending with Calcium released from the SR (sarcoplasmic reticulum)
Explanation / Answer
The vet would have given the injection of Mestinon. Mestinon is also known as pyridostigmine or Regonol. This is a Cholinesterase Inhibitor; Cholinesterase degrades acetylcholine. Mestinon injection blocks the degradation of receptors, acetylcholine. This leads to increase the level of ACH and then can bind more with ACH receptors. This treatment does not cure completely the disease because it is a symptomatic treatment.
