Question
http://www.webassign.net/knight/p23-50.gif is the picture of the digrameShown from above in Figure P23.50 is one corner of a rectangularbox filled with water. A laser beamstarts y = 8 cm from side A of the container and enters thewater at position x. You can ignore the thin walls ofthe container.
If x = 22 cm, does the laser beam refract back into theair through side B or reflect from side B back into thewater? ****refract back intoair***** Determine the angle ofrefraction or reflection i got 45 but it was wrong, thesecond part was exactly the same thing, i used the same method andi got it right, anyone have idea :) http://www.webassign.net/knight/p23-50.gif is the picture of the digrame

Explanation / Answer
tan=x/y tan=22/8 =70.0168 The angle of incidence as given by, i=(90-70.0168)=19.9831 Applying Snells law the angle of refraction 1sini=2sinr 1*sin19.9831=1.33sinr sinr=0.25694 r=14.8891 Then the angle of incidence on the other side as i=(90-14.8891)=75.11 The critical angle as given by 1.33sini=1*sin90 sini=0.75188 ic=48.75346 As i > ic there will be no refraction and total internalreflection takes place. As i=r The angle of reflection i=r r=75.11 Hence we get by it. "Hope this helps!Best of luck for the rest of yourcoursework."Related Questions
